Russia is home to some of the world’s finest universities and
institutions that have earned the acclaim of many international
bodies including UNESCO and the World Health Organisation.
In most universities, students studying for an undergraduate or a
graduate degree undergo a number of internal tests and
examinations which are strictly formulated by the institution to
meet the exacting demands of the field of study. Students are
given either a ‘passed’ or ‘failed’ grade in these
internal tests and examinations.
Students will also have to undertake two state examinations, set
by the Russian government, each academic year. The state
examinations are conducted in January and June. Students are
graded “excellent”, “good”, “satisfactory” or
“unsatisfactory” on these examinations.
Today, there are over two million students pursuing tertiary
qualifications in Russia. A number of who are international
students who have chosen Russia’s standard of higher education
to give them an enriching foundation for their futures.
Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction for most tertiary courses is in Russian.
International students receive a one-year preparatory course conducted in Russian, in which they will learn Russian and the prerequisite subjects needed for their university
studies.
However, there are certain Russian universities who offer tertiary
courses and programmes taught in German, French or English.

most from your higher education. Also, certain courses will
require that you demonstrate proficiency by the 3rd year of study.
